:: Forest Bathing ::

Forest Bathing... ahhhh

 I had never heard of the term "forest bathing" before reading the article this week.  Though the act of spending true quality time with oneself and nature is incredibly important for one's wellbeing, I had some issues with this becoming a new phenomenon in Britain.  The way they described incorporating forest bathing for people's health care raised flags for me. It seemed as if it's becoming a resort-type excursion only for those who can afford it.  I started thinking about accessibility to nature in the Bay Area.  We have so many beautiful places to forest bathe, though it requires a car, time off from work, or time free of the kids.  It is not by chance that our nature is furthest from our poorest & most sick communities who are most in need.  I wish that instead of solely creating programs to properly forest bathe, that our tax dollars could go into incorporating nature within our urban areas.  There are plenty of empty lots that could be rid of trash, not be used for a new condo, and instead used for well maintained greenery.

Don't get me wrong, forest bathing sounds incredible, I just want it to be accessible to all. This article was a great reminder to spend time in nature in solitude - sans a friends, sans phone.  Just nature + my spirit, body, and mind.

  1. I totally agree with you on this! It is unfortunate and unfair that those with access are usually those who are able to perform these new health trends and tasks. My only thought would be perhaps hopefully those who do get to experience this will then be able to advocate for more forests and areas for this in their own backyard so that others can have access. It is so important and the Tenderloin Forest is one example, when I stumbled upon this a few years ago I was genuinely surprised at how nice it was to walk through is even though the situation on the streets right past the gate were typical of the neighborhood. Anyone who is in somewhat of a clear mindset could seriously benefit from something like this in all cities!
